Christmas Proves the Most Wonderful Time of the Year for Dalry Family Butcher

A Dalry family butcher is toasting the most successful Christmas in it’s 36-year history after welcoming a host of new customers over lockdown.

R Stalker & Son, a Dalry institution selling locally produced Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb and Specially Selected Pork, was one of the area’s only shops to remain open when lockdown was first announced, and quickly adjusted its business model to safely serve as many people as possible.

This included the introduction of a free delivery service for all orders, resulting in a huge spike in demand from the local community, including those shielding. Thanks to existing relationships with local suppliers, R Stalker & Son was able to keep shelves fully stocked throughout the pandemic.

Ronnie Stalker, who runs the butcher shop in Dalry and also a second shop in Beith, said: “This year we've seen a big increase in trade. We've had family members of customers as far away as London contacting us to make sure their family could get deliveries to ensure they were well fed during this crisis. The generosity and kind spirit of the nation really has come to light over the past year, and we’re proud to bring locally made, quality products to more people than ever.”

The growing customer base has had a knock-on impact on Christmas orders, with the festive season set to be the butcher’s most successful yet thanks to people continuing their support of local businesses and adding high-quality Scottish produce to festive menus.

The success reflects research carried out by red meat industry body Quality Meat Scotland that revealed Scotland’s love of local produce grew over lockdown, with over three quarters (79%) of people agreeing it is important to continue to support local*.

Lesley Cameron, director of marketing and communications at Quality Meat Scotland said: “We’re really pleased to hear that Ronnie and the team at R Stalker & Son have seen the business go from strength to strength over the past few months, highlighting that people are really keen to support local businesses and make ethical shopping choices that we hope will continue beyond the pandemic.

“As we end the year, we want to extend a huge thank you to everyone across the Scottish red meat industry and beyond who played a part in keeping quality food on tables over what has been a hugely difficult period for so many people.”

As a member of Quality Meat Scotland’s Scotch Butchers Club, R Stalker & Son has committed to sourcing its beef, lamb and pork from selected quality assured who adopt best practice in regard to animal welfare and production methods.
