As part of a Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) funded project, with support from the Scottish Government*, SAC Consulting (part of Scotland’s Rural College) is running a series of free Suckler Cow and Bull Management workshops in the coming weeks.
The workshops, which will take place at three farms around Scotland, will focus on suckler cow nutrition, bull management, cattle health issues and genetics. There will also be an opportunity for general discussions on issues that are of direct concern to attendees.
Speakers at each workshop include: Robert Gilchrist, QMS Knowledge Transfer Specialist; Gavin Hill, SAC Beef Specialist; Karen Stewart, SAC Feeding Consultant; and a local vet.
Mr Gilchrist said that these events will offer a valuable opportunity for beef farmers to increase their knowledge with regard to managing cattle on a tight budget.
“Previous workshops have proved extremely popular and we look forward to more farmers leaving these events armed with the latest information and advice on managing bulls and suckler cow herds.”
Mr Hill said: “The event will allow producers to discuss the issues they currently face.
“Many of our livestock areas have endured poor weather conditions which have impacted on the cattle at grass and making forage. It has been an expensive spring and summer for many and this will have an impact on the herds for some time to come.”
Attendance at the workshops is free and lunch is provided. Please note, clean boots are essential for biosecurity.
