Hear from shepherdess, Anna MacKinnon on her experience as one of Quality Meat Scotland’s (QMS’s) ambassadors, supporting our wider reputation work to promote the benefits of Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb and Specially Selected Pork to communities around Scotland.
I had the privilege of delivering the first session of the QMS Scotch Ambassador scheme to a group of enthusiastic student teachers at Perth University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). Our goal was simple yet significant: to equip the future educators with the knowledge and materials needed to spread positive red meat messages in schools throughout Scotland.
With over 50 student teachers participating, we delivered one of four engaging sessions focused on different sectors within agriculture - seeds and grains, micro-greens, fruit crops and red meats. Our session focussed specifically on Specially Selected Pork, perfectly timed with the upcoming ‘Tasty Little Pork Week’ campaign launching next week (W/C 28 October 2024). One highlight was testing out a brand-new QMS recipe: a delicious teriyaki Specially Selected Pork and broccoli stir-fry that I'm sure will inspire many to bring a taste of Scotland into their classrooms!
The QMS Scotch Ambassador programme is designed to connect passionate individuals with schools and communities, promoting the benefits of Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb, and Specially Selected Pork. Ambassadors engage with students and educators through farm visits, classroom sessions, and cookery demonstrations, fostering a deeper understanding of Scottish agriculture and healthy eating. This initiative plays a crucial role in educating young people about the importance of incorporating red meat into a balanced diet while supporting the local farming community.
Growing up on a sheep farm and shepherding today, I’m thrilled to be on board as a QMS Scotch Ambassador, connecting with young people in primary and secondary schools, as well as those in further education to the Scottish red meat sector. If you’re interested in following my journey, check out my Instagram @thecheferdess, where I’ll share updates on my progress as a Scotch Ambassador, along with recipes and tips for incorporating Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb and Specially Selected Pork produce into everyday meals.
For those in the education sector, I highly recommend visiting the Farming Foodsteps page. This resource offers a wealth of materials as well as information about the meat voucher scheme, which can be invaluable for teachers looking to enhance their curriculum with engaging content about Scottish agriculture and healthy eating.
Let's inspire the next generation to appreciate and enjoy the deliciousness and sustainability of Scotland’s red meat!
