Traceability Made Easier: What You Need to Know
By Kathryn Kerr, Head of Brands Integrity
At Quality Meat Scotland, maintaining trust in our industry is everything. That’s why I’m excited to share news of an important upgrade to one of the key tools we use to support traceability across the supply chain — the new QMS Traceability Checker, developed in partnership with ScotEID.
Why the change?
The existing PGI Checker has served us well but is based on an older platform that’s becoming difficult to update and run on modern computer systems. We knew it was time to evolve.
Our new checker is web-based, which means no more installation headaches and it works on any device, anywhere. This upgrade isn’t just about technology; it’s about making it easier for you to access accurate, up-to-date information quickly and reliably.
What’s new?
Simplified layout: The interface is more user-friendly with all essential information presented clearly in one place.
Daily updates: Data is refreshed every day, not weekly, so you’ll always have the latest details at your fingertips.
Better accessibility: Whether you’re on a desktop, tablet, or phone, the checker adapts to your device seamlessly.
What does this mean for you?
Right now, markets and abattoirs are testing the new checker while the old system remains live for members. Later this year, we’ll transition all member checkers from the QMS website to the ScotEID platform. This means a smoother experience and more reliable traceability for everyone.
Additional updates
We’re also making changes to the Scotch Potential Eligibility Cattle Checker (SPECC) from 3rd November. SPECC will no longer use additional holdings notified to QMS to confer SPE status on animals.
If you use additional holdings for grazing or wintering, you can register with ScotMoves — a handy online tool to record cattle movements between holdings without the need to update passports every time. Calves born on additional holdings can also be tagged with your main herd mark.
What ScotEID says
Scott McDowell, Managing Director of ScotEID, said: “Working closely with the QMS Team on the development of the new traceability checker has been key to its delivery. The new traceability checker will enhance assurance across the red meat supply chain, improve product integrity, and improve the credibility of the Scotch brand.”
